Having a baby: What I've learned so far

1. All babies need to be winded, even the breastfed ones or they puke!
2. If you are breastfeeding exclusively you need someone else to do everything else for you
3. If you are breastfeeding, then you still can't eat most things you like, just like when you were pregnant and worse!
4. Breastfeeding is more expensive than formula at least for the first month (see pumps, breast pads, breast shields, breastfeeding bras, etc etc)
5. You stop buying things for yourself and now shopping treats are always for baby. Still feeling the same satisfaction though
6. Formula powder smells bad (well, Aptamil does!)
7. Oil is not just for cooking, works on baby skin too! (see olive oil, coconut oil)
8. Dads are great helping out during paternity leave. As soon as they go back to work though, they get absent minded, like forgetting they are holding baby, letting his head fall, whilst they are distracted with their iphone/laptop/tv
9. Cotton wool and water only works for the first week. When the explosive poo comes in, sink and tap are your best friends
10. No matter how well you plan it, it will be already 4pm/dark before you manage to get ready to go out of the house with the baby (there is always going to be hunger/wee/poop/puke at the last minute that needs to be done).

baby ticker on my page got confused

I've just noticed that the baby ticker on my page is so confused I am past my due date that started counting the days I am over! (since there are no days left to count) haha
NOT 6 days to go stupid thing, I am 6 days over!!! (did I say I was grumpy today?)

40 weeks 6 days and grumpy

This morning I woke up very grumpy. Contractions woke me up during the night (as they usually do, for the past week) and I was getting hot flushes, making me so sweaty that I thought my water broke and I thought, maybe this is it!

But nope. Here I am, typing away, still playing the waiting game.

Did I say I am very grumpy today?

The curry smell in the kitchen from last night annoyed me. I opened all the windows and sprayed the whole place with air freshener (environmentally friendly, don't worry) and gave DH angry looks, 'cause he was just being there, on his laptop, smiling at me. I urged him to go to his office and be out of my sight, cause he annoys me too much. He obliged. Good boy. I don't think he had a choice. Crazy overdue pregnant lady, ready to erupt like a million years old volcano.

Is it my fault baby is not coming? Am I doing something wrong? Is it because of my SPD and can't walk too much? Had enough sex and man juices for a lifetime, swallowed chilies, ravished my pineapple, bounced on my ball. Nothing.

OK, I know, "you are not really overdue until you reach 42 weeks" but seriously, I've had enough now. And the worry when baby is not active [at all times] in there, that maybe something is wrong with him, it's extremely frustrating. I just want him out now, to see him breathing for real!

Every night, as soon as I get "regular" tightenings/contractions/whatever, I do my hair, make sure my toe nails are still polished nicely, check everything is trimmed and groomed. And then wait. Always ready. I climb into bed and look at myself in the mirror. This maybe the last time I see this giant ball of a bump, the size of two watermelons:

10 months pregnant - what have I learned so far

So today is the official due date as given by the NHS :) A paper type wheel thing and a scan confirmed that this is indeed the date that will make me 40 weeks pregnant or 10 months (because, who said it was 9 months of gestation?).

What have I learned so far?

1. Being pregnant is NOT easy

2. There is pain, all the way through the 10 months

3. You loose your shape and dignity

4. You make new friends that are going through the same crap as you at the same time. Most likely these will be your only friends as soon as your babies are out.

5. Partners are pregnant too! Their shape will change and get cravings. And they will have to endure your hormonal outbreaks by agreeing with you and admitting defeat.

6. Babies can kick in a way that will make your belly look square

7. Baby's kicks can be painful, but fun at the same time

8. You will avoid sex and sexual thoughts all the way through the pregnancy, up until the final two months, when your lady bits expand, blood flows in mysterious ways and hormones you had when you were a teenager are back! Having sex now is way more important than worrying about the massive belly and the baby inside.

9. If you are lucky to get increased sex drive at the last couple of months, you are excused because you "need it" so as to bring labour on.

10. You will be so exhausted by the end of the gestation, that you don't care how the baby is going to come out, as long as it's out!

haha and many more ;)

Nesting. Week 33

Finally I am getting the big urge of nesting! Baby clothes need to be washed, pram needs to be assembled, Arun's desk needs to be presentable, shepherd's pies need to be made and frozen, cupboards need to be cleaned and re-organised, plant needs to be potted. And yet, here I am, stranded flat, in bed, because of the return of that weird stomach/rib/back pain I get since week 20. That sneeky old pain that crawls back to the unsuspected me, if I dare to do anything other than resting/taking it easy. And the urge just keeps growing.

Pillow explosion

Count the pillows. What do we do to be comfy at bedtime

28 Weeks - horror of the hospital

Had my 28 week check up yesterday and baby is already head down as I thought! wow! "Is he not going to get dizzy for the rest 2,5 months upside down?" I asked midwife. She laughed. She never heard of that before apparently.
We also "tried" to view the Birthing Centre at the hospital, but in vein. Apparently they are so busy that they cancelled all the tours. Forever. "So the pools (just two) are always busy? We were told nobody uses them and we were most likely get one when we are in labour" I asked the numb looking receptionist with terror in my eyes. "I don't know, but they are both used right now." I left in tears and terror when I saw a labouring woman waiting outside reception (to get her turn?) with horrified husband by her side.
And I thought that my hospital was the best. Better than private. I have to reconsider. I am scared. For real.

My 26 Weeks babymoon bump

Notice the shadow ;)

26 Weeks Babymoon

It took us weeks to plan our Babymoon: it had to be somewhere close (short flight), but not Greece, as it was a secret from my Greek family - something about x-rays, radiation and frying my baby that my aunt said to me, which either 1. Makes her really stupid or 2. Thinks I am really stupid and tried to scare me off planes (can't decide which is worse) -, had to be quiet, require no vaccines and of course sandy beach, sunshine and 5 star service for my pregnant belly.

We found a last minute deal to Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands (or Cornwall for my family lol) to the most beautiful giant resort of the island. All the reviews were 5-star about the excellent service, how quiet it was even if it's full (full of Middle Class German families would do me), food delicious, two wonderful pools in between palm trees and of course a massive sandy beach on our feet.

We weren't disappointed, the reviews were right. Away from the loud package holidays’ tourists, our part of the island was the best choice for our Babymoon and the hotel was truly amazing. One thing we missed though. The bloody weather!

OH_MY_GOD. For the first 5 days of our two-week holiday, the sky was full of clouds, the wind was blowing hard enough to make me loose my balance and goose-bumps were my constant attire if I decided to rest by the pool! Forget about swimming, splashing and floating about, it was way too cold, making me think, I could just as well be in Cornwall!

I was devastated, being preggy all I wanted to do is lay on a sun bed, drink watermelon juice and splash about in the clear waters, but no! I had to be indoors, otherwise the wind and cold would tire me out. MIL said we were better off there than in UK where it was raining, but in UK the rain would be free!

We did some nice walks in the palm-tree forest, beach etc, but I was getting tummy stitch pains, back and rib ache, so gave up on that too.

Thankfully, on day 5, the sun came out! Woohoo! Bring on the bikini and my Ice Coffee please! Temperatures rose back to 30-32 degrees with burning sunrays and a cooling breeze (I sound like the weather man). It took me 40-minutes to get in the pool, as the water was still freezing cold from previous days, and spent only 10 minutes in, but that was only the first day of sunshine. After that, swimming, splashing and floating about was what made me happy, took all my pregnancy pains away and I was finally enjoying our Babymoon.

I also got used to been stared at (I was the only pregnant lady on the island it seems) and got spoiled with the extra special attention from the staff (free mocktails, best table in the house, etc) because of my “bambino”.

Now we are back and I want to go on holidays again! It seems those first cloudy days were enough to eat me away and make me want more rest, sun, blue and sand. Maybe a real trip to Cornwall will do me this time.

A little whale

From Bump photos and other
At the gym, first time in 6 months feeling like a little whale with my black maternity swimsuit (Maria's POV)

Tuesday 2 June 2009

19 weeks in the mummyland called Crouch End

19 weeks and more baby kicks, new flat, more boxes, two sunny balconies and beautiful neighbours.

It’s been almost a week in our new improved flat and loving it to bits. There are still boxes everywhere, as we realised we cannot really unpack unless we buy more furniture to put the stuff in (i.e. wardrobes, bathroom cabinets, bookcases), but who cares? The boxes cannot be seen from the balcony whilst I am enjoying my very cold and ultimately refreshing frappé.

I had my first social outing yesterday with people from my old work. Some of them didn’t know I was pregnant and didn’t even guess! LOL I thought that my bump is sticking out much more now and considering I was always the thin one, they would guess straight away (strangers get up for me on the tube now, surely it’s quite visible now). Not only they didn’t but also commented on how small my bump is! And then I spend the whole ride home wondering if my baby is too small for 5 months. Hmmm

Anyway, it was nice going out even though I was very tired yesterday. I had two nice fake cocktails and lovely to see everyone. Left at 21:00, but oh-well ;)

Tuesday 26 May 2009

love your preggy curves; 18 weeks and counting

I am now officially a fatty. With a vanishing waist and the appearance of my first love handles, I am a little curvy lady.

OK, yes I know, “I am not fat, but pregnant”, but try to explain that to my PD at work when she exclaimed, “You were so thin!” whilst looking at my flickr pics and then guiltily trying to cover it up “erm, I meant in this picture, not that you are not now, erm…”

No, she is not rude; she just doesn’t know that I am pregnant yet! Neither does my agency or anyone else I work with.

I find it hard to come out of the baby closet at work. Being a freelancer and not having an HR to back me up, as well as, no work, no payday, I wouldn’t want the pregnancy thing to come in the way in terms of favouring me for jobs.

I can imagine it happening: “should we call Maria for this full-week job? Hmm, maybe not because she might get tired.” Or “aww, she has to have a lunch break because she is pregnant” etc. You know the score.

One day they will realise that my ever-growing body contains another passenger and not fish and chips. And when that happens, it won’t be an issue, since I obviously didn’t make it one.

On a happy note, I have been feeling baby bouncing and dancing for the past two weeks! How exciting! She loves it when I eat sweet things like fruit or honey and I love it more when I can feel her little tiny kicks ;)

Two more weeks to go for the gender scan! Roll on!

Wednesday 6 May 2009

waking up with the birds

6/05/2009

Week 15. What a wonderful number. I am almost half way through my pregnancy and closer to the day I discover if I rightly call my bump Ella Ruby Rose (Gender scan booked 11th June). Moreover, I haven’t been sick for ages and the other day I actually felt the proper “butterfly flutter” down my belly, which is amazing news.

However, there is something new on the horizon on this wonderful gestation. Last week a new pattern emerged: Every morning I tend to wake up earlier and earlier than normal. It started last Wednesday when I woke up at a weird 6:30am (my alarm was set for 7:30am) and every day after that I would wake up earlier and earlier, until last morning when I heard the birds singing at an amazing time of 4am!

The thing is I can’t get back to sleep after that, resulting to early lunches and two-hour naps during the day. Then, I will fall asleep on the sofa as soon as Arun puts a film on at 22:00, and then wake up at midnight to brush teeth and go to bed.

This wouldn’t be a problem if I wasn’t working, but I am on a job again tomorrow with a new client and I wouldn’t want to start yawning in the middle of an edit! :p

I am wondering if this is my baby’s way of preparing me of what’s to come when she join us in October. If it is, she is doing a great job so far! Hehe

my sister's bedside table and gigantic bras

23/04/2009

Ok, I know I am biased, but don't I have the sweetest sister in the world? Look what she put on her bedside table:

I love it!

On Tuesday I went for bra shopping. OH-MY-GOD! These maternity bras are enormous! And I am not even talking about the ugly just plain white granny looking ones! I am talking about the sexy pink and black lace ones! I mean, why-oh-why does it have to cover the whole boob up?! That's not making me a very sexy mama, is it?

I went into this wonderful little Crouch End shop and awkwardly I asked for a very supportive bra, maybe maternity, we'll see :p Sweet Lucy, the owner was like "erm, are you preg, or not?" lol Anyway, she explained to me that normal bras will hurt a bit more and won't be as comfortable, so we checked out her maternity stock instead.

Sooo embarrassing! I tried the best good looking one and felt sooo unsexy! Oh and the fact that it has an option of opening at the top for boob feeding, made it worse! oh and the style is called "milk"! haha, now who is the lovely Daisy the Cow?

Still, I did buy it, since it was actually very comfy and matched it with its pretty lace panties, making me a very happy customer. So happy, I even bought my first maternity stretchmark belly rub from the same shop (love local boutiques that sell all-a-girl-needs like that).

So, off I went to work yesterday, feeling very moisturized on the right places and without the need to support my boobs with my arm on the way down the tube's escalator ;)

Saturday 18 April 2009

my first baby present!

Aren't these the cutest baby shoes ever?

My friend Al couldn't resist to buy me a present and since I've now done my 12-week scan, I felt safe to open it!

How exciting! My baby's first little pressie! hehe

12/04/2009

11 weeks today! That's almost three months! Not long before the end of my first trimester, yay! On Thursday I have my 12-week scan, I will be 11 4 so hopefully it won't be too soon to detect abnormalities. Albeit, I am very excited, can't wait to see our baby! :)

Pregnancy symptoms are easing out, thank goodness. I haven't thrown up for 6 days, even though I still get mild nausea in the evenings. Last night's Easter food shopping trip was difficult, I had to avoid the food section for ages till DH bought almost everything we needed. I had a weird craving to have candies, felt that they would make me feel better, so I spent lots of time in the sweets section, lol

Cravings and aversions are funny things. Before PG I used to eat fish and veggie/dairy-free food only, all organic and prepared from scratch. I would even make my very own chocolate spread, all raw and yummy. Now I can't touch any type of chocolate, salad or fish! And of course this is the food we preggy women need to eat! All I am craving is pastries, puddings and ok sth good, fruit (that hasn't changed thank God).

Hmmm... Now that I am thinking about it, I crave mostly sweet things! Midwives' tale: a girl? ;)

Monday 6 April 2009

we are going to be three!

Do you ever get that sudden feeling/realization that you are now going to be three? AMAZING! OMG! We are going to be a proper family by November!!! WOW

A little tiny person will be joining us! We are going to be the three marketeers! We will be going on holidays together, we are going to have fun and grow together! wow!

That's how I felt last night and how I am feeling right now, after researching for children's music to update my repertoire. Found so many fun ones! I am imagining lots of singing, dancing and laughter! OMG we are going to be like the Von Trap family in The Sound of Music!

I am hoping our new place will be very well insulated! lol

Zip a Dee Doo Dah, zip a dee hay, wonderful feeling, wonderful day!! lalalala

Anyway :p

Wednesday 1 April 2009

nausea

1/04/2009

I haven't been writing on my journal, as I have been sickly sick and more sick for over a month and didn't want to associate nausea with BC.

I felt a bit better today, managed to eat lots of puffed rice cereal with rice milk in three intervals in the morning and then had a nap at 12:30 feeling exhausted (research on breastfeeding; very tiring). Woke up with stomach ache from hunger and feeling sick again, so had cheese on toast, my only remedy.

I thought that my nausea would be better by now, or am I just being too confident after hearing all these girls in my birth club, feeling better already... I want to feel better already too!

On a positive note, I managed a two-day freelance job without being too sick! The beginning of resuming work after stopping whilst preggy?

Friday 13 March 2009

booked my first scan!

13/03/2009

I just booked my first private scan for next Friday! Hooray! According to GP I will be 8 weeks and 5 days on the day of the scan, but only then we will know for sure!

I am so excited and worried at the same time; I want to make sure that there is a little human being growing happily in my belly and it’s not a phantom pregnancy or anything. If all goes well we’ll get a couple of print outs and we'll give one to DH’s mum and another to my mum, as a Mother's Day present and a way to drop the good news.

Fingers crossed everything will go well Smile

Friday 27 February 2009

trying to get ready for the trip

27/02/2009

Decision made. I am taking my beloved laptop with me tomorrow. DH has been in California for almost a week and I am finally meeting him there. Our little sesame seed and me are travelling Upper Class on the courtesy of DH’s airmiles and I can’t wait!

I booked my complimentary hair appointment at the Lounge’s Salon and I might have a massage too - if I have time (because I am so busy). Food at the lounge’s restaurants is also complimentary. Shame I can’t stuff my face at the oyster bar, or at the wine bar.

On the plane I will be offered champagne (which will be declined oh-so-politely) and meal of my choice. And when I am ready to snooze, they will give me pyjamas and make my bed. I will have lots of newly-released films to enjoy on my private screen and if I don’t like it, I will ask them to read me a story. Joking! but yeah, I don’t know what to expect, Arun is always sent Upper Class and he’s used to it; it’s my first time and I have a feeling it will be the pick of my trip!

Back to the laptop: for the first few days DH will be working, so I’ll have plenty time to kill. Unfortunately San Diego is pretty boring (I hear), and without a car you can’t go far, so laptop will be my saviour! I’ll catch up with birth club, look for jobs, research baby things. I willhave a swimming pool to use, and I will visit a mall and the aquarium but only if I am not feeling poorly. I’ll have to consider I could be sick; pregnancy on top of jet-lug and all.

When his work is done, we will finally drive to San Francisco. J Via coastline and LA, I hope I don’t get travel-sick. But that will be another post for another day.

I better go and do some packing.

xoxo

Monday 23 February 2009

5 weeks and counting

23/02/2009

So it’s certain. I had my second test done yesterday, the one that tells you in your face: You are Pregnant! Yay! I am so excited, filled with the urge to tell everyone I know!

I thought I was too obsessed about TTC but now, I am obsessed with my foetus! If I am not on BC, I am reading pregnancy books, going week by week, discovering how my baby looks like right now and finding out the 101 ways that can go wrong!

Symptoms so far:

  1. Hungry – I am full and full and full and then suddenly… BANG! Extreme starvation! No signs, no warnings! Just an urge to eat anything I find in front of me, otherwise I will die!
  2. Bloated – So bloated. Trying to imagine that this will be my belly in two months because of baby and not wind.
  3. Tummy ache – I have lower abdominal cramps every now and then, mostly at night. I hope it’s normal. My first Dr appointment is in two days…ages still!
  4. Brown spotting - stopped yesterday! Yay!
  5. Sleepy – I am sleepy and tired all the time. 30 minute exercise and I want to go to bed.

It has been decided that we are not telling anyone else (told my sister on my first test) up until we return from our trip in California.

DH flies tomorrow on business there and I am meeting him in LA on Saturday. I will be flying alone and had been a bit worried, but thank goodness for BC forums! The girls reassured me that I have nothing to worry about, except just getting up every hour and stretch, let the blood flow J

Lovely. OMG just thought about the shopping I can do over there! I might even look for maternity wear hehehe

I better go and do my research.

xoxo
